Rakhine Extremists Vandalize Ancient Mosque in Rathedaung

Rathedaung – Some Rakhine (Magh) Buddhist extremists vandalized an ancient mosque in Rathedaung around 12:30 AM today, locals report.

The extremists broke into the mosque; burnt down religious books including Qurans; destroyed cupboards and shelves; and damaged Mihrab (the place of the Prayer Leader).

The exact reason behind the attack on the Mosque is unknown. However, the locals believe that the Buddhist extremists are being manipulated by the Burmese military to give the ongoing military assaults on the Rohingya civilians a communal portrayal between ‘Rakhine and Rohingya.’

The mosque was built in the year of 1896 and is located at Zaydi Pyin Area (Kian Daung Fara) in Rathedaung Township. There are 75 Rohingya Muslim households in the area with the majority of 4500 Rakhine Buddhist households.
