Firearms looted from Teknaf Ansar camp recovered, three arrested

RAB personnel recovered several firearms and ammunition looted from the Teknaf Ansar camp last year from Naikhyangchhari, Bandarban in the early hours of Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel of RAB 7 Ashikur Rahman said they had arrested two Rohingya men Khairul Amin and Master Abul Kalam Azad – from outside the Kutupalong camp with the firearms around 9pm on Monday.
Later, another Rohingya man Hasan Ahmed was arrested from Teknaf over the Ansar camp attack.

Based on their statement, RAB conducted a drive at several hills of Naikhangchhari upzila and recovered a sub-machine gun, six magazines, one Chinese rifle and one M2 Chinese rifle.

Robbers attacked Ansar personnel at the Rohingya refugee camp at Nayapara on May 13 last year. They shot dead the outpost’s in-charge Md Ali Hossain, 55, and looted two sub-machine guns, nine rifles and ammunition from the camp’s armoury.

Five firearms looted from the Ansar camp have been recovered so far.

RAB chief Benazir Ahmed and Ansar Director General Mizanur Rahman told the media at the site that the law enforcers would continue their operation for two more days.

Thousands of Rohingyas are living in two refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. Many more are believed to be scattered across Bangladesh.

The Rohingya has been a contentious bilateral issue between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Dhaka says many Rohingyas are involved in criminal activities. In 2015, the expatriate welfare minister said some 50,000 Rohingyas were staying abroad with Bangladeshi passports.
