Maungdaw – Despite the harsh and disastrous conditions
faced by the Rohingya community in Maungdaw Township and other places, hundreds
of Rohingya students are sitting for the University Entrance Examination being
held nationwide in Myanmar from today (Mar 8), it has been reported.
The University Entrance Examination is the most important
examination for a student’s future in Myanmar and is the examination which
every student studies hard and anticipates for.
There are approximately 2,000 Rohingya students sitting
for the examination in several examination centers across both Maungdaw and
Buthidaung Townships. Most of the students were affected by the military
attacks of the Rohingya population under the so-called ‘Region Clearance
Operation’ that began on October 9, 2016.
“Most of the students were unable to go to school or
tuitions and prevented from studying at home as they had to often flee in fear
of the arbitrary arrests by the Myanmar Military and Border Guard Police (BGP).
They were not having proper studying materials such as books and journals.
“However, with the little they have studied, they are
still hopeful and sitting for the examinations”, said a Rohingya youth based in
Maungdaw.
Some Rohingya students sitting for the examinations
complain that they are being discriminated by the Rakhine teachers and the
examination authorities by openly favoring the Rakhine students in the exam
halls.
The students have received ‘Exam Admission Tickets’ after
handing over ‘their University Entrance Examination Permission Forms’ to the
relevant authorities and answered the first day’s paper of the Examination,
which is Myanmarsar or Myanmar Literature, today. And so, many Rohingya
students will likely to quit this year’s examination from tomorrow as they
couldn’t attend school and didn’t have enough time to study due to the
violence.
Editor’s Note: We wish every student in Myanmar does well
in the most important examination of his/her life: the University Entrance
Examination.
