Myanmar Gov’t Tempts Rohingyas for NVC with Ludicrous Leaflets

By RVision TV Correspondent | March 5, 2017

Maungdaw — The Myanmar government handed some ludicrous leaflets with rhetorical lines written in three languages — Myanmar, English and Bengali — to the Rohingyas during a meeting in Maungdaw on Saturday (Mar 4) tempting them to accept the NV Card (the National Verification Card).

The Maungdaw district authorities summoned three representatives each from many Rohingya villages in Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships and held the meeting in the meeting hall of Maungdaw Township Administration on Saturday. The people attending the meeting were ordered to accept the NV Card and left in awe and intimidated by the leaflets handed to them later.

“This is a really facetious and ridiculous act by the government led by Daw Suu Kyi. We still wonder why they have included Bengali language in the leaflet. What were they thinking? Hardly does anyone of us here read Bengali language. Perhaps they used the language to give a touch of reality to their long-embraced delusion regarding us as Bengalis. With that, they are only making fool of themselves, not us”, said Rohingya youth in Maungdaw.

But the locals are concerned with the apparent threats and intimidation used in the leaflets and many notice papers attached at many places in Maungdaw.

The youth added “the leaflets are full of rhetorics and contain threats and are intimidating. No one is gonna believe them. And we are not accepting NVCs no matter what.”

Some lines written in the leaflets or in the notices are: “To have guarantee of life, keep NV Card together with you; Getting NV Card makes safe and many.”

The government has arrested several Rohingya village heads, already imposed restrictions on their movements and means to their livelihoods for refusing to accept the NVCs. Now, this approach is considered to be a soft approach being implemented to confuse the Rohingyas regarding the NVC.

The Rohingya people as a whole categorically reject the NVC as it is meant to issue to the foreigners recently arrived in Myanmar and valid for only two years. Therefore, accepting these cards will automatically deprive the Rohingya people of their indigenous status with the identity ‘Rohingya,’ disqualify their citizenship rights by birth and deny them their full rights as citizens.
