Maungdaw — Almost 40 hours after three Myanmar troops
went absconding, they were nabbed by their commander and other troop members
from the jungles of Northern Maungdaw on Sunday (March 12) evening, it has been
reported.
The three soldiers in uniforms along with their guns fled
from their battalion 536 based at the ‘Zaydi Pyin’ Buddhist monastery in the
village of ‘Londoong’ in northern Maungdaw at around 11:00 PM last Friday (Mar
10).
After that, they broke into a Rohingya home at the nearby
village of ‘Sabbay Gone (Haazir Bil)’ and demanded Kyat 200,000 from the family
claiming they (the soldiers) were in troubles.
“They came into my home and said that they were in grave
troubles and needed Kyat 200,000 to flee. They were forcing us but we only had
Kyat 10,000. So, we gave them to them so that they don’t torture us”, said the
head of the family asking to withhold the identities of his and his family
members.
After they had left, the terrified family informed the
villagers of the incident, who in turn informed the village administrator and
the commander of the Battalion 536.
“We were terrified by it. In case that anything had
happened to them, the authorities would have accused us of killing them and
burnt down our village. So, we rushed to report it to the relevant
authorities”, said a villager of Sabbay Gone.
In the morning on Saturday (March 11), the commander and
other military personnel from the Battalion 536 and the village administrator
of ‘Sabbay Gone’ started out in search of the soldiers. At around 10 AM on
Saturday, one of the three soldiers surrendered.
At around 2:30 PM on Sunday (March 12), other two
soldiers were arrested by their commander and his forces while they (the two
soldiers) were absconding amidst the jungles located to the east of Sabbay Gone
village.
It is not exactly known why the soldiers fled from their
camp as we couldn’t reach out to the administrator of ‘Sabbay Gone’ or other
relevant authorities.
In a separate incident early in the evening on Friday
(Mar 10), five militants believed to be Rakhine Buddhists raided the Myanmar
Border Guard Police (BGP) Camp at the village of ‘Aung Zan’ in Region 2 in
northern Maungdaw and fled with at least three unloaded guns.
According to our sources , the Police stopped them by the
check-post upon suspicions. Many explosive materials and remote controls used
to make weapons were found upon searching them. As the policemen were checking
their bags, they were said to have raided the camps and fled the place with the
policemen guns.
