Foreign minister urges united global action to end Rohingya crisis

By BDNews24
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali has urged the international community to act together to address the root causes of conflict in Myanmar and to ensure justice and accountability for the ‘crimes against humanity’ in Rakhine State.

He referenced the genocide faced by the people of Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War at a meeting with Adama Dieng, the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Prevention of Genocide, at his office on Thursday.

The special adviser is currently in Dhaka on an official visit.
He will visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and interact with the forcibly displaced Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar.
Mahmood Ali briefed Dieng on the current situation involving the Rohingyas.
Referring to the bilateral arrangement on the return of the Rohingya between Bangladesh and Myanmar, he stressed that a conducive environment needs to be created in Rakhine.

He said the international community must impress upon Myanmar authorities to take necessary measures so that the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals can return to their homes in safety, security and dignity.
Dieng commended the government and the people of Bangladesh for hosting the displaced Rohingyas and providing thwm with humanitarian assistance.

He also agreed that accountability and justice must be ensured and the root causes of the Rohingya problem must be addressed.

He said the UN Security Council should play a stronger role.
Dieng issued a statement on Oct 19 last year, calling on the Myanmar government to take immediate action to stop and address the commission of atrocity like genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes that are reportedly taking place in northern Rakhine.
