UN special envoy to visit Myanmar, Bangladesh

United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy on Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener is set to undertake her first visit to Myanmar in her new capacity.

Following her visit to Myanmar, which begins Tuesday, the special envoy plans to visit other countries in the region – including Bangladesh, according to her travel information.

Pursuant to her General Assembly mandate, the special envoy will speak to a variety of parties including Myanmar authorities, ethnic armed organizations, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.

The primary topics of discussion will be Rakhine state, the peace process, democratization, and human right issues.

After she took up her new assignment on May 16, Burgener visited New York and Geneva for introductory consultations with the secretary general and other senior officials of the United Nations as well as interested member states and INGOs.
