He insisted on
keeping “sustained continued pressure” on Myanmar to solve the crisis.
An influential
member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senator Merkley led a
congressional delegation to Bangladesh and Myanmar in November last year and
visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The Bangladesh
embassy said the ambassador’s meeting on Thursday was to follow up on the
efforts taken by the US lawmakers to create pressure on Myanmar to resolve the
crisis.
The ambassador
informed the senator that the government of Bangladesh was doing its best with
limited resources to cater the needs of over a million persecuted Rohingyas
temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh.
He thanked Merkley
for leading the delegation to Bangladesh and pointed out the ramifications of
the crisis.
He stressed upon
"sustained continued pressure" on Myanmar government by the US and
the international community to stop the violence and to ensure continuous flow
of humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas temporarily sheltered in
Bangladesh, as well as to those uprooted Rohingyas in Northern Rakhine region
of Myanmar.
The senator also
lauded Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts to the persecuted Rohingyas sheltered
in Bangladesh.
