Organize Empowerment Activities for Rohingya Refugee Women
Kuala Lumpur – A coalition of NGOs organized empowerment
activities for Rohingya Refugee women in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday (November
26).
The event was organized by ‘the Reyna Movement’, ‘Beadlebug
Jewellery’ and ‘Kakak and Adik Project’ from Singapore in collaboration with
Malaysian NGO ‘Tabung Amanah Hati Nusantara’,
Rohingya Women Activist, Ms. Sharifah Shakirah and some local Malaysian
women volunteers at Gombak area, Kuala Lumpur.
The empowerment activities mainly focused on motivational talks,
women and maternity health and teaching the refugee women the skills of making
handicrafts.
The handicrafts such as Bracelets and the necklaces made
during the event were bought at RM 30 per piece.
The main idea behind teaching the refugee women handicraft
skills is to increase the sources of daily incomes and self-sufficiency of the
refugee families. The handicrafts made by the refugee women will be bought by
the Beadlebug Jewellery which will later be sold through online platforms to
the potential customers.
Dr. Subah, a medical doctor volunteering for the Rohingya
refugees, delivered the talks to create awareness of the importance of the
women and maternity health among the refugee women in Malaysia. Ms. Nadiah and
Ms. Ilham from the from ‘Tabung Amanah Hati Nusantara distributed foods to the refugee women around
the area.
Post that, Ms. Raeesah Khan from ‘the Reyna Movement’ and Ms.
Sharifah delivered women empowerment speeches on the self-sustainability and
living integrated and peacefully in the local Malaysian societies.
More than 20 refugee women attended at the event and
expressed their happiness and willingness for their future participation. More
series of events and activities on the refugee women empowerment are to be
held.
The aim of the activities and movements is to empower the
Rohingya refugee women with some skills for self-sufficiency and with the
knowledge of the importance of the role in society as a woman, as a mother or
as a wife.
