Rohingyas Tortured and Homes Plundered by Military in
Northern Maungdaw

Maungdaw — Several Rohingyas including a 95-year-old man
were tortured and their homes plundered by the Burmese (Myanmar) military at
the village of ‘Kyar Gaung Taung’ in northern Maungdaw last Sunday (on Jan 8),
according to reliable sources.
Approximately 50 Burmese soldiers from the ‘Battalion 551’
based at the ‘Kan Pyin’ Rakhine village raided ‘Kyar Gaung Taung’ on the Sunday
evening, where they arbitrarily arrested four villagers and looted money, and
jewelries/ornaments from a dozen of women in the village.
The four people arrested were severely tortured in the
village the whole night. The victims are:
(1) Shahdat Ullah (95)
(2) and his son, Karimullah (55)
(3) Sayed Amin (44), the village administrator of ‘Kyar
Gaung Taung’
(4) Ajimul Khan (52), ex-Chairman of ‘Kyar Gaung Taung’
They were taken to the military camp at ‘Kan Pyin’ in the
next morning (i.e. on Jan 9 morning) and also tortured there. On January 10,
the military released Sayed Amin (the village admin) and Ajimul Khan
(ex-chairman) but the former father-son duo were released only after extortion
of Kyat 0.8 Million ransom.
The 95-year-old man, U Shahdat Ullah, is now in critical
condition and may lose his life due to the injuries received from the military
tortures.
