Myanmar now has to bear the full responsibility for what
could well be the worst human atrocity of our time
In spite of widespread international condemnation, the
Myanmar authorities have reportedly killed more than 1,000 Rohingya in a recent
crackdown.
There is no doubt that these horrors are indeed
happening, and that the Myanmar government is directly responsible.
And yet, Myanmar continues its denial — shrugging off
claims that civilians were being killed by the numbers.
Myanmar, in this latest move, has shown its lack of political
will to curb the persecution of Rohingyas, and a disregard for the opinion of
the world.
The world must now stand up and take stern action against
Myanmar, if we are to stop this horrifying assault against a stateless people,
and the world’s most persecuted minority.
Condemnation is not enough, political and economic
sanctions need to be placed to force Myanmar to change it course of action.
There is no national security objective that could
justify what Myanmar is doing — systematic and coordinated attacks on a people,
due entirely to their ethnicity and religion.
It is all the more frustrating that Nobel prize-winner
Aung San Suu Kyii is nowhere to be found when it comes to stopping or
condemning these actions.
Suu Kyii, instead of speaking out on the atrocities, has
shown that she cares more about political points, and will not speak out in
favour of an unpopular group like the Rohingya.
The recent democratisation of Myanmar has done nothing to
change its government’s course of action.
Myanmar now has to take responsibility for this terrible
humanitarian crisis.
