A mass fire destroyed the village market, locally called it “Saleh Bazaar,” of ‘Zin Paing Nya’ village track in northern Maungdaw on 16 April, afternoon.

The fire at the village’s market began at around 2:00 pm, which destroyed 13 shops including food stores, mechanical workshops and fuel shops.

Some military personnel arrived soon after the fire broke out and prevented the villagers from extinguishing the fire. The fire brigade didn’t arrive either and after two hours, the fire died off after turning the market into ashes, an eyewitness said.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, likely an accidental fire but some locals suspect the Myanmar military torched market in order to destabilize the region once again.

The ‘Zin Paing Nya’ village is locally known as ‘Zammoinna’ is a Rohingya village under the Sector 6 in northern Maungdaw, Rakhne State.
