Wednesday 1439/10/13 - 2018/06/27
Geneva, Shawwal 13,
1439, Jun 27, 2018, SPA -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has condemned human
rights violations against the Rohingya Muslims, in Myanmar, and regrets that
the Myanmar government has not cooperated with the UN Special Rapporteur on the
situation of human rights, in Myanmar, in this regard.
This was unfolded,
in the speech of the Kingdom here today before the Human Rights Council,
delivered by the Head of Human Rights Section of the Permanent Delegation of
the Kingdom to the United Nations office, in Geneva, Dr. Fahd bin Obaidallah
Al-Mutairi.
The Kingdom called
upon the Government of Myanmar to cooperate and allow the Special Rapporteur to
enter the country and provide security for all affected areas.
Al-Mutairi said that
the series of displacement and violations of the Rohingya minority continues
despite international resolutions calling on the government of Myanmar, to
create the necessary conditions to end these violations and stop the
displacement of the Rohingya minority to neighboring countries and facilitate
their return to their country.
The signing of the
memorandum of understanding between the Office of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Program
(UNDP), in early June 2018, with the Government of Myanmar is a positive step,
he pointed out, towards resolving this crisis and a prelude to the voluntary,
safe and dignified return of the refugees.
He called on the
Government of Myanmar to begin effectively implementing this memorandum and to
end the suffering of hundreds of thousands of refugees, noting that the issue
of the Muslim minority in Myanmar was a priority issue for the Kingdom.
He also called on
the international community to intensify its efforts to stop what appears to be
systematic ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims and to intervene, in
order to find a humanitarian solution that protects the Rohingya minority from
the acts of violence and collective punishment.
